my mother's wedding dress

I wrote about my parents relaxed and delightful wedding here. My mom's dress was non traditional...she picked it out of a catalog. I think it's funny because I picked mine out of an online catalog....totally not the way 99% of brides pick out their dresses.

I wanted to use this dress in some way during our wedding festivities. I thought about wearing it as my wedding dress - altering it a little bit to make it more my style (but the cost of that is insane...and my little sisters would probably murder me if I altered my mom's dress.) And I thought about wearing it for my rehearsal dinner...but no way Jose, not at a BBQ joint. I thought about taking all of the pearl buttons to making a charm bracelet. I just REALLY wanted to do something cool with it.

So - I had the ever talented, Megan Hamilton, sketch it. I'm a huge fan of Megan's and have admired her work from afar for soo long. When I got it in the mail it turned out even more lovely than I imagined. This is a real piece of art...and when I showed my mom, it brought tears to her eyes. I knew that would happen, we are sentimental fools, my mother and me....what can I say.

I just love how it turned out! I'm such a genius for thinking to do this with her dress...I really am...and yes I'm totally patting myself on the back for it.

I sent Megan a few snap shots of me wearing my mom's dress. And her rad skills did the rest.

I've decided to wear it to my bridal shower (uummmm....with shoes...obvs...and a thick brown belt...and some sort of boob minimizer??). I bet my mom will get a kick out of seeing me wear it. It's actually a really rad silk dress - I just wish I was a seamstress to make it knee length and I'd be able to wear it all the time!!

  1. Ah, that's great! So fun to get out your mom's wedding dress. I just blogged about my dress today but linked to the old post of my mom's dress. Would love to try to do something with it but I'm afraid my right arm wouldn't fit in it.

  2. Honestly, I never considered wearing my mom's dress. They had a very traditional wedding and her dress was the typical 80's wedding gown. Which is so, so, so far from my style. But that dress is gorgeous. What a sweet idea to have it sketched, that's such a great way to incorporate it.

  3. What a great idea! I will be drawing everything I purchase for the wedding as a scrap book of sorts...!

  4. That's such a great idea... what a gift! Before my wedding we got out my moms poofy 80's wedding dress. I was drowning in it... it definitely did NOT look as good on me as that lovely silk dress does on you!

  5. Such a sweet drawing. ps- making it knee length would be a very simple alteration for a friend or dry cleaner to do. I would simply add another tuck to the skirt above the first one and then remove the bottom hemmed piece altogether.

  6. Awesome, awesome idea - and yay for wearing it to your shower!

A friend of mine wore her grandma's 1940's green wedding suit to the rehearsal and dinner. Her grandma loved it!

Other options are to put the dresses on a dress form at the wedding if there's a space for it.

  7. That is a freaking cool idea. If I could cry because of the sweetness of it all I would. Unfortunately, my tear ducts don't work that way

  8. My grandmother pushed for me to wear my mom's wedding dress since I was a little girl. But as it turns out there is NO way I would fit into my mom's dress. She was about 98 lbs at the time and I am far far above that. I never thought I would be relieved to weigh more.

  9. That was so smart of you! What a fun anniversary present for someone as well! I wish my mom was sentimental and would like something like that, but she is so not that way..

  10. Aww, that is so sweet! And after seeing this I want her to do my dress. I can make a dress but I can never make it look good on paper.

  11. Thanks again for posting the sketch. I can't wait to sketch dress #2 for you. I'm excited to see your dress.
