baby name game

what a sweet lil guy!! -  Sarah Neal Photography

Tommy and I have long ago selected a name for our baby girl.  However, we will not be announcing our little one's name until she makes her debut next March.  THAT way, it will be a fun surprise for everyone!

Not only will keeping her name a secret be a lil surprise for our friends and family, but it will keep me from going crazy with the comments about baby name choices.

Let me elaborate.

I've found that when couples are expecting, and share their naming options with others - people can be rather ridiculous (if not unintentionally cruel) about giving their opinions.

For example, I was working with a doctor awhile back who happened to be pregnant.  Her patients would frequently inquire about baby names.  She would indulge them and share the names they were considering.  People would say such silly things like,

"oh you can't name your baby that! It's a dog's name!"
"that's my ex-wife's name"
"I hate that name, reminds me of such-and-such"
"that doesn't really sound good with your last name"
"that's an old lady name!  you can't give your child an old lady name!"

Of course, some people, would compliment her name choice, but it was so hit or miss.  People can be goofy about that stuff. And some of us are a little sensitive to those things.  Like me...  :-)

But I still wanna play the name game and I will so totally be giving my fave name selections on here soon!!

  1. I plan to do the same thing when I have a baby. For that reason as well as I feel once you announce the name you are locked into that name. People start buying personalized gifts with the name and such and then you can't really change it if the baby comes out and doesn't fit that name or you decide the day before you like another name better. With that said I can't wait to hear what you pick!

  2. When my mom was pregnant with me, her neighbor was also pregnant with a baby girl. My mom told pregnant-neighbor-lady HER baby name (for me), which was Nicole Marie, and the lady named her daughter Marie Nicole. Soooo... yeah, there are also baby-name thieves! It's smart to keep her name to yourselves until the day you officially meet her & name her. Just my two cents! xoxo.

  3. I do agree that keeping the name a secret until the baby is born is generally a good idea. I get a kick out of what happened when my brothers-in-law both had pregnant wives who were scheduled to deliver only weeks apart and both families kept the names secret. The result? Bella was born and then her cousin, Stella, was born a couple weeks later. Needless to say, I will never be having an Ella. :)

  5. i love thinking about names. i very frequently will ask my husband "what do you think of penelope?" or "what about reagan for a girl's name?" he doesn't particularly like this game, or most of my name choices, but isn't it fun???
