a brother for christmas

my sisters and I in 1989

My world flipped and turned upside down a couple of months ago...in the best, most incredibly exciting way.  I found out...at 29 years old...I have an older brother.

A older brother.

Something my little sisters and I would talk about rather frequently in our childhood days.  I remember begging our parents for an older brother....obviously we knew our demands would never be met...but we would verbalize these desires regularly.  No joke.  And then when we were older, we would comment about how "perfect" our family was...and how amazing and lucky we were to have each other...but how completely amazing it would have been to have a big brother.  Seriously.  We would have those conversations.

And.  Well.  It looks like all of those stars we wished on were listening.

One of my parents had a child while in college; that beautiful baby boy was put up for adoption.  How they were able to keep such a secret from us is unreal - as we are a very close knit clan - it must have been one of the hardest things in the world to do.  Through much perseverance my brother found our family...'twas not an easy task.  (Well, to give credit where credit is due, his wife had a lot to do with the actual "finding.")

He has the shape of my grandfathers eyes, and my sisters smile...he looks like my brother.  It's amazing.  Oh.  And not only do I have a brother...but I have a sister in law...and two nieces and two nephews.

Tomorrow, my family meets him for the first time. So bummed I'm not there.

Can you even believe this?  Life is full of the most fantastic surprises.
